UCAn swim a rainbow too

Members of the London and Oxford public were presented with an extraordinary opportunity earlier this month, the chance to swim in a cloud of light and colour!

‘The Big Swim’, devised by artist and UCA project co-ordinator Tine Bech, took place at Camberwell and Barton Leisure centres on the 23rd and 24th of July.

It was supported by the Creative Campus Initiative, a consortium of 11 universities across the South East, including UCA.

The free interactive art installation formed part of the London 2012 open weekend and offered every day people the experience of swimming through the colours of the five Olympic rings.

Participation and community involvement are two of the key principles of the London Olympics; Ms Bech told us how she hoped her exhibition would promote these principles;

“This exhibition sets the scene for people to have a free play experience, it will hopefully attract people from the local community who perhaps aren’t usually interested in art or even regular swimmers”

“Young people are a big focus of the Olympiad and this installation can help them get into sport and culture at the same time, I’m focused on making art which is for anybody, not just for the few who go through the gallery door”

With the Olympics set to begin in under a year’s time, events such as ‘The Big Swim’ are crucial to build interest and public engagement.

The innovative experience perfectly combined the often contrasting cultures of art and sport, but most importantly it incorporated the key ingredient of fun, leaving the participating public quite literally in the pink.

Close encounters of the UCA kind

The UCA B&C School returned to the nation’s capital in early July to visit Situated Encounters, an exciting group exhibition from a selection of Farnham’s finest graduates.

The show, which was based in the Oxo Tower Wharf Bargehouse, opened its doors to the public from the 7th to the 10th of July and featured carefully selected work from thirty former UCA students.

I spoke to two of the featured artists, Christina Lawton and Jeffrey Male, to learn more about the roots and aims of the exhibition;

Christina: “It’s a very diverse mix of artwork from 3D Sculpture to Film, Painting and Drawing, being our first group exhibition it’s really a chance to launch ourselves into the wider art world”

Jeffrey: “There is also a big spread of ages, from graduates in their very early twenties to more mature students and even part-time students such as myself”

Jeffrey: “It was decided that we should branch out from the degree show and come in to London to try and really make our mark here”

Christina: “It’s got us out of the university environment as practicing artists and allowed us to get our work seen in a very atmospheric setting”

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Situated Encounters is a shining example of UCA students using their own initiative to propel themselves into the wider art community.

Epsom magazine set for launch this Sep-Temper…

From Architecture to Advertising, Sports Journalism to Silversmithing, UCA offers an array of creative courses that would rival any University in the country.

But how much do students in say…Fine Art know about the work of their counterparts in Textiles or Ceramics? The more pertinent question is perhaps, if they want to know, where are they supposed to look?

One third year Fashion Marketing student in Epsom asked herself these very questions,
and came up with her own innovative solution.

The new academic year will see the launch of Temper, UCA’s first student focused free magazine. Creator and Epsom Entrepreneurial Society Chairman Jennifer Le Fey told us more about her exciting new venture…

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

How did the idea come about?

Jennifer: The idea for Temper came about in January when I realised just how little communication there was in UCA Epsom and in the whole of UCA. As Epsom Entrepreneurial Society’s (EES) main objective is to help bridge the gap between students and employers, I realised that UCA students have such potential yet little opportunity to showcase their creativity, as a University for the creative arts this seemed bizarre.

What is the aim of the magazine? What kind of issues will it cover?

Jennifer: Temper aims to promote communication between the courses and the campuses as well as showcasing our talent and featuring inspiring articles about entrepreneurs. Its main feature will be a gallery where we will have selected students work from all courses in UCA.

Have you had a strong student response to the idea?

Jennifer: 94% of UCA Epsom students said this was the opportunity they needed. As well as being  interested in other courses, the response to a magazine for students by students was extremely positive.

The magazine is currently based around Epsom…if successful would you look to expand to UCA’s other campuses?

Jennifer: We would love the opportunity to expand across all campuses given the response from students. We would look to found and support students from each campus to make this possible.

Who is involved in the magazine currently? Are you looking for more people to get involved, if so how can they do this?

Jennifer: There are currently 5 members working on Temper as well as students contributing their work. We are looking for more people to become part of EES and Temper, both look extremely good on your CV and will help raise your profile when you go out into the working world.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Temper magazine launches in September; contact Jennifer Le Fey for more information at jenniferlefey@tr3p.com.

UCA Epsom plays host to talented youngsters

UCA Epsom has recently taken part in the National Art and Design Saturday club scheme.

The UCA campus teamed up with the Sorrell Foundation to offer 26 Epsom youngsters, aged between 14 and 16, the chance to work with global design consultancy firm Priestmangoode.

Visitors admire last year's exhibition

As part of the innovative workshops, the young people were given a brief to design new ways to improve eating and drinking places on planes, trains and buses, and then pitch their ideas to the boss.

Paul Priestman, one of the company’s founding directors said: “We wanted our workshop to show that through creative and innovative thinking and team work, you can find solutions to improve every day user experience, which is what design is all about.

“By the end of the workshop, we had four very creative solutions on how to improve eating and drinking on public transport.”

The designs from the UCA class have been brought together with work from 13 other Saturday Club events around the country to form an exhibition at Somerset House, in London.

The Exhibition began on June 22nd and will run until July 17th, so it’s not too late to catch a glimpse of the creative minds of the future!

Invitation to Digital Surrey business leaders

A unique opportunity to contribute to the Development of
Policy for Internet Governance

NOMINET, the not-for-profit organisation that is responsible for the smooth and secure running of the .uk Internet infrastructure, is running a series of workshops to capture the views of various interest groups on how they use the internet today and how they might use it in the future.

As a leading partner of the UK Internet Governance Forum, Nominet is seeking to encourage and inform debate to contribute to the UK’s submission to the annual United Nations Internet Governance Forum (UN-IGF) taking place in Nairobi in September 2011.

The workshops, facilitated by future thinking and scenario planning experts SAMI Consulting, will be based around scenarios of potential futures. Participants will be asked to engage with the scenarios, and contribute their views as to how particular issues – such as privacy, rights piracy, national security – play out within the context of those scenarios.  The output will be combined with the results of other workshops and used to prepare the Nominet input to the UN-IGF.

We are looking for people to participate actively in the discussions, rather than to have a “right” answer or any specific technical knowledge.  No preparation time is required.  Opinions will not be attributed to particular individuals or organisations.

The workshop will be on the afternoon of 29th June 2011, with tea and coffee from 1pm, and the formal session starting at 1.30pm. We will finish by 4.30pm at the latest, probably earlier.  The venue will be in Room W612 at the University for the Creative Arts, Falkner Rd, Farnham. Please come to the main Gallery Reception where we will collect you.

This is a unique opportunity for Digital Surrey members to contribute their views to an important policy area.  This promises to be a fascinating and stimulating afternoon exploring a range of possible future outcomes.
